WTA has always offered classes and seminars that teach you how to fight in controlled environments. But, what happens if you’re called to fight in the street? When there is no judge, no doctor ring side and no rules? What if you find yourself in a tricky situation that you need to get out of quick? Knowing how to defend yourself matters. The most popular reason people join WTA next to fighting is to learn self-defence. That’s why we’ve expanded our offering to include Krav Maga. Stick with us, remain teachable and you’ll learn pretty quick why this is the secret to our self-defence formulas.

Introducing Krav Maga

Krav Maga is a discipline that teaches self-defence designed to disarm an attack in two seconds. It requires quick thinking and effective responses under stress and pressure. Krav Maga emulates highly stressful scenarios and teaches fundamental skills that help you protect yourself and ultimately survive.

Krav Maga was founded in Israel and built for the military. In highly hostile environments where hijacks and kidnapping is the norm, soldiers had to move very quickly to protect themselves from harm.


the difference between Krav Maga and Muay Thai?

When it comes to Muay Thai or any other fight discipline for that matter, you have really good insight into your fighter. You know their height, weight, stance and reach. You have a good story and perhaps have the luxury to watch videos of their past fights. When you fight it’s in a controlled environment with sanctioning bodies, judges, corner crews, refs and medical teams onsite should anything go wrong.

Krav Maga is built for self-defence. You don’t know your attacker, their intentions, state-of-mind or whether they’re under the influence of anything. Your weight, height and stance isn’t matched. Your attacker could be bigger than you and stronger than you. Krav Maga teaches you how to respond, protect yourself and survive in fight scenarios where there is no control.

What sort of things will I learn?

We’re not here to brawl. Krav Maga is built to suit the self-defence laws of the country it is taught in so that you can best protect yourself. You will learn quick ways to disarm or distract an attacker so you can get away. You’ll also learn techniques to get yourself out of trouble. The best part of Krav Maga is that your trainer will emulate highly stressful scenarios to teach you how to perform under pressure and when adrenaline levels are high.

Do classes include contact?

Krav Maga encourages the outcome where both parties walk away without a fight and no confrontation. Sometimes that involves distracting and attacker and running away. It’s about you walking out safely and protecting yourself. With that said, there are times where our classes involve contact. We do our best to prepare you by demonstrating movements beforehand, asking permission before touching you to demonstrate a movement and use the back of our hands to do so.

who is the tlp Self-defence trainer?

Andre Martiz is affiliated with Krav Maga Global and brings over 38 years experience to the gym. Andre has a military background and has trained in multiple fight disciplines including Muay Thai. No stranger to circumstances where Krav Maga is required, Andre has experience a hi-jacking in South Africa, a knife attack in the streets of Pretoria and an attack within his car at a red light. Andre is a highly sought after expert in self-defence delivering workshops and seminars to workplaces all over Aotearoa.

how OFTEN DO YOU RUN SELF-DEFENCE CLASSES?

We currently offer two 90 minutes classes a week on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6pm. Each class covers a range of defensive movements. These classes are open to ALL levels and gender.

how do i book a class?

If you’re new to WTA you can trial a self-defence class FREE. If you like it, you can sign up to a Self-Defence only membership or pay $35 per week to gain 247 access to TLP and ALL boxing, kickboxing and self-defence classes.
