HOW WTA IS COMBATTING CONCUSSIONS

Fighting is a gruelling sport that comes with risk of injury. Yep, it might be a bruise or cut lip— that’s easy enough to manage. Beyond that, particularly in the ring, injuries like broken bones, internal bleeding or concussions are not unheard of.

At WTA, we acknowledge that with this sport comes the possibility of serious injury which can lead to long term issues. Our model is to build preventative measures, train our people to intervene and ensure all staff know how to support someone injured and show appropriate Fight First Aid care

We’ve all heard the stories of professional athletes who have suffered from concussions and struggled later in life. It’s a very real experience that is entirely possible in the combat sport world. For us, we wanted to take a serious approach to combatting concussions. Here’s how things roll at WTA.

PREVENTION

  • We’ve built graduation processes into our class structures so we can be sure that members have the skills and competency to handle contact levels.

  • All full contact classes are closed to the general public and require licenses to attend. It helps our trainers provide a consistent training approach to classes while keeping our beginner and intermediate members safe.

  • The WTA Concussion tool is provided to every member who walks in our door. A simple reference guide that fits in your back pocket to identify the signs and symptoms quickly. This aligns well with our awareness posters which are visual on all levels of the gym.

INTERVENTION

  • The WTA Concussion Policy provides a step-by-step guide for staff and trainers to follow to minimise risk.

  • All contact classes are delivered by a trainer with Fight First Aid training and an awareness of concussion management.

  • Our staff to member ratio in contact classes ensures safety.

CARE

  • All trainers at WTA have completed Fight First Aid and Concussion training by an approved first aid provider.

  • All trainers have completed training of the WTA Concussion policy

  • All levels of the gym are equipped with first aid kits that provide the appropriate equipments for concussion care including our own defribillator. We’ve also considered gear that enables the safest possible first aid care while minimising the spread of COVID-19.

All trainers from WTA, Krav Maga and Green Gloves boxing have completed our annual training. We see this as an awesome step towards combatting concussions and creating a safe environment for our members.
